Guam Remains in COR 4; Be Alert for Any Changes

On Sunday night, Governor Lou Leon Guerrero and Acting Lieutenant Governor Tina Rose Muna Barnes met with emergency management stakeholders from the Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD), the Department of Public Works, the Guam Department of Education, the Mayors Council of Guam, and Joint Region Marianas to receive an update on Tropical Storm Hagibis.

The National Weather Service (NWS), Guam Weather Forecast Office continues to monitor Tropical Storm Hagibis. As of 7 p.m., Hagibis was located 14.3 degrees north latitude and 153.3 degrees east longitude, about 510 miles east of Saipan and 575 miles east of Guam.

Tropical Storm Hagibis is moving west at 20 mph with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph. It is forecast to intensify through Monday, possibly becoming a typhoon late tonight or early Monday morning.

The community is advised to stay up to date on the latest information. There may be changes to Condition of Readiness (COR) as early as Monday morning. Be prepared to take action.

A typhoon warning remains in effect for Tinian, Saipan, Alamagan, and Pagan Islands, meaning typhoon conditions, including destructive winds of 74 mph or more, are expected within 24 hours, around Monday afternoon.

A tropical storm warning remains in effect for Rota and Agrihan Islands meaning tropical storm conditions, including damaging winds of 39 mph or more, are expected within 24 hours, around Monday afternoon.

A tropical storm watch remains in effect for Guam, meaning tropical storm conditions, including damaging winds of 39 mph or more, are possible within 24 to 30 hours.

GDOE schools remain open tomorrow. GDOE school administrators are prepared to take necessary actions, should there be changes COR and emergency shelters are needed. At this time, schools continue normal operations.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) remind the community to be prepared to take action in the morning:

·  Stay up to date with the latest information.

·  Locate or prepare your emergency preparedness kits for your household; stock up on non-perishable food items and water for your household, flashlights, first-aid kits, batteries, matches or lighters, portable stove, toiletries, etc. Visit https://www.ready.gov/build-a-kit for more information on what to include in your supplies list.

·  Secure important documents such as birth certificates, tax papers, and insurance documents and keep copies in a water-proof bag.

·  Clear loose debris around your yard and store any items that may become airborne with heavy winds, such as canopies, tarps or trampolines, before inclement weather arrives.

·  Gas your vehicles and get fuel for your generators now while the weather is clear.

·  Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action; clear drainage areas and unblock clogged storm drains in your area to minimize the chance of flooding.

·  Once inclement weather arrives, avoid camping, parking, or hiking along streams, rivers, and creeks during heavy rainfall. These areas can flood quickly and with little warning. Visit https://www.ready.gov/floods to learn more.

Keep in mind that with expected heavy rains, artificial containers will continue to collect water around residences. As part of continued efforts to minimize the spread of the dengue virus, the community is advised to eliminate these mosquito breeding sites around their homes.
