The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), has rescheduled the nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) to October 3, 2018, beginning at , which converts to (ChST).
The WEA portion of the test will commence at for the continental U.S. only, and the EAS portion follows at (ChST) for the continental U.S., its territories, and CNMI.
Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) are emergency messages sent by authorized government alerting authorities through your mobile carrier.
Guam, American Samoa, and the CNMI do not have U.S. based cellular carriers that participate in WEA and will not receive the WEA notification through mobile. FEMA is aware of the gap and is reviewing ways to get WEA to the territories in the future.
The Emergency Alert System (EAS) is used by alerting authorities to send warnings via broadcast, cable, satellite, and wireline communication pathways.
Guam, American Samoa, and CNMI will receive the EAS message via television and radio.
The EAS and WEA tests described are not connected to an actual emergency. The All Hazards Alert Warning System (AHAWS) local sirens will not be tested on; only the WEA and the EAS.
