Thunderstorm Advisory in Effect; Practice Caution

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a thunderstorm advisory, in effect for the Guam International Airport Authority until 12:45 a.m. Thursday morning. Thunderstorms are possible or occurring within 20 nautical miles of the airport.

Be alert and take precautions as required. These storms have been producing occasional lightning. If outdoors, seek shelter if lightning is seen or thunder is heard.

    Community Invited to the National Preparedness Month Grand Finale Event, September 30

    The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) invite the island to participate in the National Preparedness Month (NPM) Grand Finale event on Saturday, September 30, 2023, from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Agana Shopping Center.

    The U.S. Geological Survey recorded an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.8 that struck 274 km SSW of Merizo Village, Guam, with a depth of 10.0 km, at 7:10 a.m. (ChST).

    As advised by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, there is no tsunami threat to the Marianas from the earthquake. There were no major damages or injuries for Guam reported from the earthquake.

    Volcanic Haze Advisory in Effect through Wednesday Morning

    The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a volcanic haze advisory, in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan through Wednesday morning. A band of haze is reaching the Marianas along easterly trade-wind flow from the Hawaii region, likely originating from the recent Kilauea activity from September 10 – 16. Depending on winds around the Marianas, the density of haze will be variable the next few days.

    While The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) debris mission continues to move forward, FEMA would like to remind residents that once each category of debris has been picked-up in a neighborhood or village, USACE will not be returning to that area for additional debris removal.

    Flood Advisory in Effect for Northwest Guam; Practice Caution in Heavy Rain

    The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a flood advisory, in effect for northwest Guam until 6:30 p.m. this evening. Urban and small stream flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected. Between 1 and 3 inches of rain has fallen.

    Some locations that will experience flooding include Ritidian Point and Guam National Wildlife Refuge.

    Residents and visitors in those areas are advised to take the following precautionary actions:
    • If driving, be alert for low visibilities and slippery roads in heavy rain;

    No Immediate Threat to Marianas Assessed from Reported North Korea Launch

    The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD), in conjunction with the Mariana Regional Fusion Center (MRFC), federal and military partners, continue to monitor events surrounding the region including reports of the recent launch of an unidentified projectile out of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) today. 

    AHAWS Siren From Agat Not Connected to Emergency

    The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) are aware of the All Hazards Alert Warning System (AHAWS) sirens located at the Agat Senior Center and Agat Marina sounding of the siren this morning and continuing.

    The Agat AHAWS siren is not connected with any emergency situation and assessments are being made on the system. Future tests of the AHAWS sirens will be conducted on a monthly basis and will typically fall on the first Tuesday of each month, unless it falls on an observed holiday.

    The deadline for Guam residents to apply for federal assistance due typhoon Mawar was July 28, 2023. But what if you were hospitalized, or off island and unable to apply? In rare cases survivors may be eligible to submit a late application to FEMA. The deadline to submit a late application, is Sept. 26, 2023
