NWS Advisories in Effect for the Marianas; Hazardous Seas Remain

The National Weather Service (NWS), Weather Forecast Office Guam has the following advisories in effect:

small craft advisory is now in effect for the coastal waters of Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan, until 6 a.m. Saturday. East winds of 20 knots with frequent gusts up to 25 knots are expected making conditions hazardous to small craft. Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid boating in hazardous conditions.

JIC RELEASE NO. 659 - 139th COVID-19-Related Fatality Reported; Four of 324 Test Positive for COVID-19;UPDATED COVID-19 Vaccination and Testing Schedule

139th COVID-19-Related Fatality Reported
The Joint Information Center (JIC) was notified that Guam’s 139th COVID-19-related fatality occurred at the Guam Memorial Hospital (GMH) at approximately 7:08 p.m. on Tuesday, May 4, 2021. The patient was a 70-year-old male with underlying health conditions. He was admitted to GMH on May 4, 2021 and tested positive upon admission.

138th COVID-19-Related Fatality Reported
The Joint Information Center was notified that Guam’s 138th COVID-19-related fatality occurred at the Guam Regional Medical City (GRMC) at approximately 11:17 a.m. today. The patient was a 54-year-old male with underlying health conditions. He was admitted to GRMC on April 29 and tested positive upon admission.

East winds of 15 to 20 knots with gusts up to 25 knots are expected making conditions hazardous to small craft. Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid boating in hazardous conditions.

JIC RELEASE NO. 657 - 137th COVID-19-Related Fatality Reported; Fifteen of 572 Test Positive for COVID-19;COVID-19 Vaccination Schedule; Food Commodities Distribution Continues

137th COVID-19-Related Fatality Reported
The Joint Information Center was notified that Guam’s 137th COVID-19-related fatality occurred at the Guam Regional Medical City (GRMC) on May 3, 2021, at approximately 5:37 a.m. The patient was a 59-year-old male with underlying health conditions. He was admitted to GRMC on May 3, 2021, and tested positive on arrival.

Fire Weather Watch in Effect for Guam; Outdoor Burning is Not Recommended

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office has issued fire weather watch for Guam, in effect through Thursday afternoon. A fire weather watch means that critical fire weather conditions are forecast to occur.

Sustained winds at 20 mph, with gusts to 30 mph are expected. The combination of strong winds and 55 to 60 % humidity will create ideal conditions for the rapid spread of wildfires. Any fires that develop may spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

JIC RELEASE NO. 656 - Three COVID-19 Cases with U.K. Variant Identified on Guam;Community Reminded to Practice Caution

Today, the Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) received the second set of results from virus samples that have been collected on Guam and have undergone genome sequencing by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Virus samples were collected between January 2021 and April 2021. To date, a total of 61 SARS-CoV-2 virus samples have been submitted to the CDC for genome sequencing. 

DPHSS received the first set of results on March 19 from the CDC, which confirmed seven (7) of 26 samples identified the B.1.429 California Variant.

DPHSS Places Order for Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna Vaccines
Last Friday, the Department of Public Health and Social Services’ (DPHSS) Immunization Program placed an order of 22,230 doses of Pfizer-BioNTech, and 10,500 doses of Moderna vaccines, totaling 32,730 COVID-19 vaccines for the month of May. All vaccines are anticipated to arrive within three to five business days. This order is part of the 74,630 doses allocated to DPHSS for the month of May.
