GHS/OCD, JRM, NBG, and AAFB to Conduct Routine Testing of Advanced Warning Systems

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD), Joint Region Marianas (JRM), U.S. Naval Base Guam (NBG), and Andersen Air Force Base (AAFB) will conduct routine testing of the vital communication and advance warning system sirens, respectively, on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, starting at 3:15 p.m.

GHS/OCD will test the nineteen (19) All Hazards Alert Warning System (AHAWS) sirens in conjunction with JRM, NBG, and AAFB monthly routine testing of the “Giant Voice (GV)” sirens.

High Risk of Rip Currents and Small Craft Advisory Remain in Effect

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office has the following advisories in effect:

A high risk of rip currents remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan through Friday afternoon along east facing reefs. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from the shore into deeper water. If caught in a rip current, do not swim against the current. Swim in a direction following the shoreline, face the shore and call or wave for help.

Report Positive COVID-19 At-home Test Results to DPHSS

Report positive COVID-19 at-home and over the counter (OTC) test results to the Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS) via email: dphss.surveillance@dphss.guam.gov. You must report your positive result within 24 hours and provide the following information:

No Immediate Threat to Marianas Assessed from Reported North Korea Launch

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD), in conjunction with the Mariana Regional Fusion Center (MRFC), federal and military partners, continue to monitor events surrounding the region including reports of the recent launch of an unidentified projectile out of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) today.

High Surf Advisory in Effect; Inexperienced Swimmers Advised to Stay Out of the Water

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office advised a high surf advisory is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday along north facing reefs. Large breaking waves of 7 to 10 feet are expected along north facing reefs of the Marianas.


Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous conditions.

Earthquake Recorded

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.6 that struck 20 km N of Yigo Village, Guam, with a depth of 128.3 km, at 10:43 a.m. (ChST).

There were no damages or injuries reported from the earthquake. There is no tsunami threat to the Marianas from the earthquake.
