NWS Issues High Surf Advisory, High Risk of Rip Currents

The National Weather Service (NWS) Weather Forecast Office Guam has issued a high surf advisory for Guam, Rota, Tinian and Saipan, in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday and there is a high risk of rip currents through Wednesday afternoon.

NWS advised hazardous surf of 9 to 11 feet on north and west facing reefs will continue through Tuesday. The hazardous surf will continue longer on north facing reefs, lasting through Wednesday.

NWS provides precautionary actions; residents and visitors are advised to avoid venturing near exposed reefs and beaches, especially those facing north and west, as rip currents will be life threatening. If caught in a rip current, yell for help, remain calm and stay afloat. If swimming out of a rip current, swim parallel to shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to swim directly against a rip current.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) remind that all care and caution must be exercised by anyone who will be near the ocean.
