NWS Issues Short Term Forecast; Practice Caution on the Roadways

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office issued a short-term forecast for Guam and Guam coastal waters.

Through 3 p.m., scattered showers and thunderstorms will bring locally heavy rain and occasional cloud-to-ground lightning to parts of southern and central Guam and the adjacent coastal waters southwest of the island. An inch or more of rain is possible in the heaviest showers.

If driving, be alert for brief ponding of water on roads. Dairy Rd. in Mangilao was reported impassable, due to a stalled vehicle in floodwaters. Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes.

An urban and small stream flood advisory is in effect for southwestern Guam until 3:45 p.m. Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to bring heavy rain to portions of central and southwest Guam, with 2 to 3 inches of rain possible through 3:45 p.m. The rainfall is expected to produce minor flooding of urban areas and other poor-drainage and low-lying areas, mainly from near the airport southwest across central Guam to Agat.

thunderstorm warning is in effect for the Guam International Airport until 4 p.m. Thunderstorms are occurring within 5 nautical miles of the airport.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) remind the community to practice extreme caution while traveling in these rainy conditions, driving below the speed limit and allowing enough braking distance between vehicles. Seek shelter is lightning is seen or thunder is heard.
