Short Term Forecast Issued, Flooding and Thunderstorms Expected

The National Weather Service (NWS), Weather Forecast Office Guam issued a short term forecast for Guam. Through 12:00 p.m., slow moving thunderstorms will bring heavy downpours and occasional lightning to much of Guam and Rota, as they move across the east/northeast. Areas with heavier showers could see up to an inch and a half of rain in, with up to two inches in the southern areas of Guam. This will cause urban and small stream flooding in those affected areas.

A flood advisory means river or stream flows are elevated, or pending water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent.

If driving, be alert for reduced visibility due to heavy rainfall and ponding of water along roadways. If you see lightning or hear thunder, seek shelter indoors.

Boaters can expect visibility down to a quarter of a mile with heavy rainfall. If thunder is heard or lightning is seen, boaters are advised to get below deck and avoid touching metal parts. For those near the shores, return to harbor until weather has improved.

A thunderstorm advisory is in effect for the Guam International Airport until 12:00 p.m. this afternoon. Thunderstorms are expected within 20 nautical miles of the airport. Be alert and take precautions as required.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) advise the community to practice extreme caution while traveling in rainy conditions, driving below the speed limit and allowing enough braking distance between vehicles.
