Stay Out of the Water; Hazardous Surf and Seas Remain

The National Weather Service (NWS) Guam Weather Forecast Office advised a long-period north swell generated by a storm east of Japan is producing hazardous surf along west, north, and east facing reefs of the Marianas. The following advisories are in effect:

high surf advisory remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 6 a.m. Sunday along west and east facing reefs. Large breaking waves of 9 to 12 feet are expected. Everyone should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions.

high risk of rip currents remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 6 a.m. Sunday. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from the shore into deeper water. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous conditions. If caught in a rip current, do not swim against the current. Swim in a direction following the shoreline, face the shore and call or wave for help.

small craft advisory remains in effect for the coastal waters of Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 6 p.m. Saturday. Northeast winds of 15 to 25 knots and combined seas of 10 to 13 feet are expected. Conditions will be hazardous to small craft. Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid boating in hazardous conditions.

red flag warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. this evening for Guam. East winds of 15 to 25 mph and humidity at 55 to 60 percent in the afternoon are expected. Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) remind the community to remain out of the water while the advisories are in effect.
