GHS/OCD and NBG to Conduct Routine Testing of Advanced Warning Systems

The Offices of Guam Homeland Security and Civil Defense (GHS/OCD) and U.S. Naval Base Guam (NBG) will conduct routine testing of the vital communication and advance warning system sirens, respectively, on Tuesday, January 7, 2020, starting at 3:15 p.m.

There are now nineteen (19) All Hazards Alert Warning Systems (AHAWS) installed on island. On November 5, GHS/OCD will test the AHAWS sirens in conjunction with NBG monthly routine testing of the “Giant Voice (GV)” sirens. 

Avoid Hazardous Seas and Dangerous Rip Currents; NWS Advisories in Effect

The National Weather Service (NWS), Guam Weather Forecast Office has the following advisories in effect:

high surf advisory remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until 6 a.m. Friday. Hazardous surf of 8 to 10 feet along north and east facing reefs is expected.  

high risk of rip currents remains in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan through Friday afternoon. Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore. Dangerous rip currents are expected along east and north facing reefs.

Windy Conditions Expected; Avoid Hazardous Seas

The National Weather Service (NWS), Guam Weather Forecast Office advised surging trade winds will bring windy conditions today. The following advisories are in effect:

wind advisory is in effect for Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan until midnight tonight. East winds of 20 to 30 mph with frequent gusts to 35 mph are expected today. Secure items that can become airborne with heavy winds such as canopies, tarps, and tents. Be alert for sudden wind gusts if driving a high-profile vehicle, such as a container truck.
